Art and memorial sites – Part two: memory lab

17th May 2019 | 14:30 - 18:00

Part one: Art and memorial sites

Memorial sites and places of remembrance are projection screens: for societal and political expectations, for individual and collective hopes and traumas, for pedagogical processes. Forms of artistic examination at these sites express all these expectations. Forms of artistic examination at these sites are themselves formulated expectations. These articulated themselves already immediately after the liberation of the camps and these continue to articulate themselves until today.

In the first part of the workshop a first reflected impression of the examination of Art and Concentration Camp shall be given from the perspective of memorial site practitioners.

Part two: Art and memorial sites – memory lab

The workshop continues in the afternoon with a Memory Lab. In Memory Lab, possibilities, opportunities and limits of artistic examination at memorial sites and places of remembrance shall be formulated, discussed and tried out. The following aspects will be focused on: Questions of appropriateness, questions of self reflection, questions of relevance, questions about playing with expectations from inside and outside, questions about opportunities and limits of participatory elements, questions on collaboration with art creators. Ideally these questions shall be discussed and worked upon on concrete potential task areas.

The workshops can be attended independently from each other.

Workshop facilitators: Yariv Lapid, Jörg Skriebeleit
